Islom Abduganiyevich Karimov

Born: 30 January, 1938 in an orphanage in Samarkand. I. Kamirov studied engineering and at the Central Asian Poly-Technical Institute and economics at the Tashkent Institute of National Economy. Later he worked at the Tashkent Aircraft Plant and also steadily progressed up the ladder of Soviet State and Communist Party offices in the Uzbek SSR. In 1989 he became the First Secretary of the Uzbek Communist Party and in 1990 the President of the Uzbek SSR. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, he declared Uzbekistan to be an independent country on 31 August, 1991. Since then he has been the only President that Uzbekistan has had. He made a state visit to Latvia in 1995 and was at the house on 6 - 7 June.
